I have two boxes of Algerian Dates given by my boss to all his staff during the fasting month. I was blessed even though I was not fasting during the Ramadhan month :p Wild Boar loves them . He loves the dates still attached to the stalk. He said they are not overly sweet, just perfect for him . I took some to make this teacake. Dates and almond goes hand in hand and were perfect for this tea cake. A keeper for sure and I gave half of the cake to Piggy Cuz and she smsed me and said it was good. Even Wild Boar asked for more, but I won't allow him to eat the whole cake, thus Piggy Cuz got half the share :p She can't wait for me to post up the recipe LOL! Yea, I agree with her that it was a fantastic cake....moist and delicious !

Seriously, this dates and almond tea cake is good to serve to family and especially when you have friends coming for tea . It is easy to make and foolproof, so you don't have to worry that it will not turn out good.
There are many types and brands of dates available in the market but these with the stalk still attached are the best in my opinion. I saw this recipe in a chinese magazine. I adapted it by adding sour cream to it and the texture tuned moist and I love it. I like it because it uses almond meal in the cake mixture . The cake smell good with the dates and almond meal when baking in the oven. Even my piggy dog came to the table and sniffed at the cake LOL! he is a real greedy piggy dog :)

I used a pan with a detachable base for this tea cake
for easy removal and also so that the almonds flakes
will not drop off when you remove it from the pan

Dates & Almond Tea Cake
150 gm butter
60 gm brown sugar
3 tbsp of sour cream or
a pinch of salt * optional
150 gm plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
50 gm almond meal ( ground almond )
250 gm dates - seeded and chopped
1/2 tsp cinnamon powder * I use 2 tsp of vanilla extract
120 gm almond flakes for topping
Preheat oven at 170C 10 minutes before baking.
Sieve plain flour , cinnamon powder ( if using ), and baking powder together till well mixed. Leave aside.
Beat butter and sugar till white and light, add eggs one at a time and beat till well incorporated into the butter and sugar mixture. Add in sour cream or yoghurt and beat till well incorporated. Fold in flour mixture and almond meal into the batter mixture till well incorporated , add last the chopped dates and mix till well mixed. Pour into a greased pan ( I used the pan with detachable base ) . Cover the top with almond flakes evenly. Bake at 170 C for 30 minutes or till the top is lightly browned or put in a skewer , if the skewer comes out clean, it is cooked . Take out and cool it for 5 minutes before taking it out of the pan and cool it on a wire rack . Cut the cake when it is completely cool down for easy cutting.
