Simple Banana Cake - Revisited

Last month I baked a simple banana cake, recipe taken from Alan and it was so good that I had to make it again.  This time, I added sliced banana as topping and whoa, it was really good.  Hubby loves it so I had to bake again for his afternoon tea snack.  For me, I don't mind baking again as this will help improve my technique further as the saying goes " Practice Makes Perfect " :)  I love the light and fluffy texture and seriously one slice is not enough. We have to have at least 3 slices each for our tea snack.  Love the aroma of banana :)

this time I baked the banana cake with banana topping

see how light and fluffy the texture of cake is :)  yummz!

Treats For Game Players

As a kid I often served the folks who came to our home game parties.  My parents were avid card game players who enjoyed games like contract bridge and bid whist.  They would often invite friends to play at our house from early evening until the following morning.  And whenever these card game parties took place my mother would make certain the guests had plenty to drink and snack on while shuffling cards, making bids and growling at one another for misplays or erroneous scoring.  As the waiter, I was charged with the task of filling and refilling bowls of snacks at each table.  This was a plum job since it meant I got to savor each snack.  I also was occasionally rewarded by the guests with a coin or two that went into my savings.

Now when I have my own guests visit to play a car race or to play PS4 basketball or football games I maintain the family tradition by seeing that they have a selection of snacks and drinks to enjoy.  I have at least four different categories of snacks.  Like my parents always did I will have at least one tray that has a hot snack – either chicken wings or something else hot and spicy – sometimes West Indian meat patties or some tiny spring rolls with duck sauce.  For those with milder preferences I will put out some classic pot stickers that I usually stuff with crab meat and green onion.  And my final two trays usually contain brownies for those who love chocolate, and shrimp toasts that I keep warm in a slow oven until serving.

Often I have two or three different versions of trail mix – seasoned with garlic and onion powder, spiced with cayenne, and tossed in a blend of Worcestershire sauces with wine and a dash of tobacco before baking until golden brown.  All these combinations are made using bowls and containers that I obtain during my Groupon shopping sprees, where I get most of my large containers as well as baking pans and mixing bowls for great discounts.

Once prepared I put out the mixes in serving bowls for the game players to have nearby so they can easily grab a handful to munch on while enjoying a football or basketball match they play using PS4 video games obtained from Groupon’s latest listing of available games.  Since my children see that the guest bowls are constantly refilled and that drinks and supplies are handily available I am also assuring that a tradition my parents passed on to me is being maintained through the next generation of my family.

Konyaku Jelly With Mixed Fruits

A simple dessert for the weekend :)  A packet of konyaku jelly powder ( honeydew flavor ) and some mixed fruits...and tada, you have a tray of 'koi' shaped konyaku jelly for after dinner treat :)  Hubby made them and I just sit back and relax.  He has the whole kitchen to himself to make these delectable dessert.  Slightly springy in texture and the mixed fruits was a great accompaniment for the konyaku jelly.

Mini Beef Sausage Bread Roll

Back to baking buns again.  Saw this recipe on Sonia's blog and I knew I had to bake it for hubby. He loves beef sausage buns.  It has been a while since I baked for him sausage buns.  Managed to get mini beef sausages from Jusco .  The recipe is so good. Easy to make and the texture is super soft and fluffy.  I love making these little buns.  Great for afternoon tea snacks or supper.  I baked a load of twenties.  We ate some for afternoon tea and kept the rest in air tight tupper and leave in fridge till needed.  For next day consumption,  we took the buns out of the tupper from the fridge, and zapped them in microwave oven for just 30 secs and they were just as good as freshly baked ones.  So convenient to have a microwave in the kitchen :)

You can hop over to Sonia's blog...she has lots of wonderful recipes waiting for us to try out.  I have actually KIV some of her recipes ...this is one that I have tried out and it is good.

Place sausage rolls on a lined baking sheet.  Repeat the rest till finished. Leave it to proof for another 30-45 mins.

Apply egg wash , then sprinkle sesame seeds on top.  Bake at a pre-heated oven 170C ( fan forced) for 15-20 mins or 180C (no fan ) for 15-20 mins.

Different Types Of Apron Material – Which One Should You Choose?

Aprons can be worn for protection in lots of different situations. You may want an apron to wear while you are baking, or for when you are handling liquids or chemicals. You need to take the reason for wearing an apron into account when you are choosing the most appropriate apron material. This helps to make sure that you have an apron that provides suitable protection for the task you are completing.
In this article we are going to take a look at some of the different types of material that an apron can be made from. Hopefully this information will help you decide on which type of apron you should invest in.

Aprons made from heavy cotton or muslin

Most of the aprons manufactured for everyday use in the kitchen are made from heavy cotton or muslin. This type of material offers protection from clothing stains caused by food stuffs. If you do not want the apron to continually look stained then you can invest in a black apron on which you cannot see marks as easily. However, many people prefer lighter coloured aprons so that they can see when washing and cleaning of the apron is required.
It’s worth noting that cotton and muslin aprons are not waterproof, so if you are likely to be working with a significant amount of liquid this type of apron may not be the best choice for you.

Aprons made from rubber or nylon

If you need an apron that is waterproof you should choose one that is made from rubber or nylon. You can be sure that the clothes you are wearing underneath the apron will remain dry and protected. This type of apron is also easy to wipe clean so it’s a good choice if you are using paints. If you need an apron that protects your clothes from staining by chemicals, a rubber or nylon apron can be a good choice. That being said, the protection offered is just from the staining and not from the danger of any strong chemicals.

Aprons made from leather

Leather aprons tend to be amongst the most expensive. It’s worth paying the extra money if you get the level of protection you need. If you are handling strong chemicals, or dealing with open flames, then a leather apron can provide a high level of protection. Leather aprons are also hard wearing so you should find that one apron lasts for a considerable length of time.
Before you spend your money on a leather apron you should always check the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure that you get the level of protection you need.
You can see that there are several materials which can be used in the manufacture of aprons. Hopefully, the details we have provided will help you to choose the most suitable apron for the task you are completing. It’s important that the apron you choose affords you the appropriate level of protection.

Increasing Your Fluid Intelligence: Hard Versus Soft Water

Water is one of life’s necessities. A person can only survive for about a week without water. We all need water, but for something so important to us, how much do we know about water? Read on to increase your fluid intelligence and get the facts about water, from its different types to some interesting things about it.

Interesting Facts About Water
·         March 22nd is World Water Day. As the name implies, it is celebrated all over the world, making water one of the earth’s only natural resources to have its own holiday.
·         We have in the world now the same amount of water that we had when the earth was formed. It’s possible that some of the molecules in your water were in the same water that a dinosaur drank.
·         The first water pipes were made of hollowed logs.
·         Far from the days of hollowed log pipelines, modern advances such as water cooler dispensers, running water, washing machines, dishwashers and indoor plumbing have changed everyday life for many of us.
·         There are two types of water, hard water and soft water.

More About the Difference Between Hard and Soft Water

·         Contrary to their description, water isn’t categorized by how it feels. Hard and soft water both feel the same. Instead, the two water types are divided by their mineral content.
·         Hard water has minerals in it such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur and lime that are missing in soft water. These minerals can make the water taste good, which is one reason why spring water is often used in bottled water.
·         Each type of water has its advantages and its disadvantages. Hard water, in addition to having a good flavor, binds well with soap. This can be a good thing when you’re trying to rinse all the shampoo out of your hair in the shower, but it also means that you have to use more detergent when washing your clothes.
·         A disadvantage of hard water is that it can leave behind a mineral residue. This residue can build up over time and contribute to clogged pipes. It’s harder on appliances and tea kettles than soft water is, and if you shower with hard water, you’ll find that you have to clean your shower on a more frequent basis than if you were showering with soft water instead.
·         Soft water, on the other hand, is easier on your dishwasher and your appliances and makes soap more effective when scrubbing pots and pans or doing a load of laundry. If you have soft water, you’ll find that your appliances are more efficient and there’s less residue in the inside of your dishwasher and on your shower walls.

Whether you prefer hard or soft water, whether you wash your dishes by hand or in a dishwasher, whether you shower or take baths, one thing is guaranteed. Water will always be an important part of your life. Share these facts with your friends and family, and celebrate World Water Day every day of the year.
